connecting two computers via usb/ethernet

To transfer files between two computers, can I connect them with a USB cable or (preferably) an ethernet cable? After I connect them do I need to set up a network or something like that? Or do I just plug it in and the other computer will show up as another drive? Thanks.

If you want to directly connect two PCs together without the use of a router, you need a Crossover cable. There's a difference between Straight Wire and Crossover. Straightwire is used for ethernet, and Crossover is used for a direct connection.
