Symptoms: when trying to install new programs, the entire desktop for windows disappears. This happens completely at random, and has yet to occur with the same program multiple times. It can be the first program I load after installing windows, or the 50th program loaded. There is absolutely no consistency to when it occurs. I am only able to access information by using the "ctrl+alt+delete" keystroke sequence to open the dialog window for Windows XP. The only way the desktop comes back, is if we completely reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows. Everything will be ok initially, but at some random point while installing the various software programs we use, the desktop once again disappears. We have replaced every single other piece of hardware in the system except the prosesser and memory, and the problem continues to happen. an you give me an idea what to do.

The configuration for the system is as follows:
Operating system: Windows XP with SP2
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP
Power supply: ANTEC 430 watt ATX TruePower
Graphics Card: VGA ATI/Radeon9250 256M DDR TV RT
CD/DVD drive: DVD+/-RW LITEON SOHW-1673S
Memory: Kingston KVR400X64C3A/1G 1GB DDR400 PC3200
