Garbage collection..

I just thought this would be a good topic, so.. well garbage collection algorithms are being used extensively in Operating Sytems to combat memory leakage (I believe garbage collection is also called memory capaction) Can some1 please give me several examples of how some of these algorithms would work in conserving memory..(3-5 please)
Plus, i basic definition of this is.. when the OS places all the blocked being used (what memory is being used) together, which leaves free memory as a single large whole..

Aggelos, you're quite clearly not from Southampton.

But isn't Garbage Collection used for the operating system to just "clean up" after a program, without the program having to be programmed to free the memory?

If so you shouldn't have to do anything.
