ipconfig doesnt show ip address

im trying to get the internet set up on a computer that i just formatted and reinstalled windows on, but when i go to ipconfig it just says "windows ip configuration" and then exits out. im guessing that means i dont have an ip address or something but if that is the case, how do i get one?

Assuming you have high-speed internet requiring an ethernet port ... are the drivers for the NIC installed? XP doesn't recognize every ethernet NIC ( a lot of them, but not all), so after doing a reload ... you might need to go to the manufacturer's website to get the drivers and install them. You may see a yellow "?" in Device Manager under unknown devices, listing an ethernet controller needing drivers.
This would be the first thing I'd check.

Are you running ipconfig from a dos prompt or the start - run - typing ipconfig ?
