Hey all. I'm looking in to building my younger brother a PC. I'm really not trying to spend a lot of money however I'd like to get some basic components that he can upgrade later.

I have good working knowledge of computers and built my previous PC about 5 years ago. I can't remember what exactly I used when building my PC (i'm on my laptop at a different location now) but I know I used an AMD processor and SATA hard drive. That PC which was built 5 years ago has performed beautifully so I'd like to start with an AMD processor and a SATA hd.

My brother will be going in to college next year so he'll probably have to do some programming. He'll probably end up using it to play some illegally downloaded games and watch porn but i'm not too worried about getting the latest and greatest video card.

so I need help building a budget pc using an AMD processor, SATA hd, 1 GIG ram, any mobo, any vid card, any psu, and any case.

I may just get him the processor, ram, hd, and mobo for now.

thanks for reading my long winded post.

now that i think about it i might have built my pc like 3 years ago. damn... i can't even remember.

i would also consider a barebones small form factor pc.

(btw - this is for a christmas present so i gotta buy it like... today =)

get a Socket 939 Motherboard, 1 gig of RAM, 1 SATA HDD, an ATi PCI-E Radeon X700, DVD-R/W, Sempron64 3000+. That should do him good in terms of graphics and processing, as the Sempron64 is 64 bit and that's the next generation thing at the moment.

Or you could get a Socket 754 motherboard with an Athelon XP 3000+ and go with an AGP 8x nVidia 6600/GT/LE and so on.

actually microcenter has a computer for $300 in the ad listed above...
amd sempron 3100+
xp home edition
256mb pc3200
80gb hd
52x cdrw
ati radeon xpress 200 w/ 64mb

anyone think that is a good deal?

My God!
Use the EDIT button. It's there for a reason. No one wants to look at one single person making 5 posts in a row.

And for the ram go with ddr400.
For vid card go with like 6600GT, it's a cheap card and has a quite good performance. If u can spend a little more then the 6800GS, which is a very good card, and not too expensive.
