6800 vs 6600 GT

6800, if you get a 6800, get the apollo, it has all the piplinesand vertex shaders unlocked. So its almost a 6800gt.

thats not really the answer i was looking for

is a 6600 GT better than a 6800 plain with nothing on top?

No. A 6800 is better because it uses a different chipset and different graphic architecture. Plus it has 4 more pixel pipelines. A 6600GT is a 6600 with just some extra speed, the 6800 is a completely different chipset and a completely different card. I think that answers your question...

EDIT: Here's some webpages and specs directly form nVidia...

http://nvidia.com/page/geforce_6600.html

http://nvidia.com/page/geforce_6800.html

And then this page, which compares 6 Series cards.

I had an MSI 6600GT and then upgraded to a bog standard 6800.

They can be overclocked MASSIVELY. Jumped up 3000 points in 3d mark 03
