Yeah, it depends really on the set up. If you have my speakers, the z5500s, yes, it will make a difference, and yes, it still does with programs open. But not noticably.
Your friend's dad is right in saving energy, although he should've told you to turn the computer off completely if he wanted to save energy, as playing music only takes up 2% CPU usage (at least on my PC's).
