power supply help

i was just wondering, in the case that a power supply dies, does it affect the hardware in any way or would a simple replacement get everything working again?

A simple replacement is all you need. The surge usually stops within the power supply or in extreme cases, go through to your motherboard damaging that. Rare, but it happens.
