Yes, you heard it right. The lower end VGA card gets a bump in RAM.

They will launch two GeForce 6600 models with 512 MB of DDR2 memory this month (December). The 6600-512 and 6600LE-512 differ only in clock settings: 350 MHz and 325 MHz respectively. Both have 128 bit interface and VGA, DVI and TV-out. The GeForce 6600 has 8 pixel pipelines and three vertex shaders engines.

nVIDIA is just looking for an excuse to make more money. The 6600's won't fully utilize the 512mb, heck, even the 256mb ones are somewhat of a waste. 512mb DDR2 with a 128-bit memory interface...hahah, wow, what do they think they're gonna get out of that?

Big memory, small performance. But it might just run Doom 3 on Ultra High settings (needs 512MB memory I think).

Yeah,that's pretty dumb. I wouldn't ever get a 512mb card like that... it's all about the 512mb 7800gtx or the 512mb x1800xt or xl, I forget... lol...
