just wondering...

windows has the 'plug and play' feature that reconises and installs hardware.

but how do you do connect other devices when using Linux?

EDIT: oops probably should have posted in the operating system section...

I believe that Linux has "hotplugging" which allows you to put new hardware in and have it be detected automatically.

yep, all linux operating systems use hotplug or something similar to detect new hardware upon booting the system. Knoppix uses only hotplug since it is a live cd, therefore all of your devices and peripherals are configured at each boot of the cd and you can easily plug in anything else while running and have it recognized

GNU/Linux also has a similar "plug and play" feature. However whether the device is detected or not will depend on the compatibility.
