gddr4 coming!

Samsung has manufactured some lovely looking gddr4 memories for graphics cards. They are still in testing but they should start to manufacture them in large numbers sometime next summer.

Ati's x1800 XT has a memory clock speed of 1500mhz, which I think is the highest one there is. But the gddr4 memories are capable of going up to 2800mhz, that being almost twice as fast as the gddr3 in the x1800 XT.
The 1st memories that samsung has manufactured were 256mb and the clock speed was 2.5ghz. (2500mhz) but they are trying to raise it to 2.8ghz during this year.

"Samsung is one of the leading memory circuit manufacturers, so the fact that Samsung is the first company to start shipping next generation of graphic card memory circuits, GDDR4, comes as no surprise.The new circuits have in fact already been been sent out to the larger graphic card manufacturers for testing. Samsung claims that GDDR4 has an almost identical design as GDDR3 which should make it a piece of cake to implement these new memory circuits, thus chosing these over the competing Rambus XDR. Samsung says that GDDR4 will be able to reach 56% higher speeds than GDDR3 and considering that among others the Radeon X1800-series already supports GDDR4 we can imagine a quite bright future for this technology. Massproduction hasn't been started yet but should start during the second quarter of 2006."

Good stuff...On a side note since we're talking about memory:

"The DDR2-memories has been out on the market for a good while now, and even though it has gained influence and reputation it has had an impossible time breaking through, since AMD hasn't got any platform which supports the DDR2-format. Right now all DDR2-manufacturers are waiting for Q1 2006, as it is expected that the demand for DDR2-memories will go through the roof. Not that unexpected either; AMD launches their Socket M2-platform, their first with DDR2-support, whilst Intel are expected to boost their production of the 945-platform. The DDR2 will undoubtedly break through during this period, and the only thing we wonder is where it will leave the market for DDR1-modules."

Once again, everything rests on AMD because everyone knows they are what makes the market grow. Intel had DDR2 for awhile now, but nothings happening.

With speed comes a price, and 8Ghz is just overkill, everything will bottleneck your RAM.

I know. Rambus said that they're most likely not releasing it for desktops. They're using it for servers, workstations, military computers etc.
