Alright, so I've pretty much stopped playing resurrection of evil due to the 9 FPS I am getting and I've decided a need a real graphics card for my computer. Here is the computer specs-Gateway 831GM-

I've pretty much settled on a Leadtek 6600GT since it doesn't cost too much, many people like it, and it seems to be able to play doom better as opposed to say, the ATI card in it's price range.

I'm confused about the whole PCI thing so I'd like to know if this card will work on my computer. I've read that PCI is not as good as AGP, but PCI-Express is better than AGP and AGP will eventually die out. It does say 1 PCI Express x16 Slot on the computer spec sheet so I assume it will work right?

Also, how hard is it to install on a computer. Is it something that I can do myself or do I need to take it somewhere like best buy?

Thanks for any help :)

As you said this was on the pc specs sheet:
# Expansion Slots 2 PCI slots (1 open)
# 1 PCI Express x1 slot (open)
# 1 PCI Express x16 Slot (open)

so this means that the PCI - Express x16 Graphics is compatible with your computer.
Hope this helps :p

yes that card will work with ur mobo.

And it's really easy to install it yourself. No point in taking it anywhere.
Since u have an integrated gpu atm, u just put the new one in the pci-e 16x slot and then go and download drivers etc. Then when u have got the drivers for ur new card just go to bios and disable the onboard video. Then change the monitor cable from the mobo to the new vid card and it should work.
