K, wasnt sure where to put this but ok./

My school was giving away some free PCs so i took one., though if it didnt work id throw it off a building or osmething, but it works.

Its a pentium 2 HP.

I got a cheap mouse + keyboard + monitor hooked up to it in my room. But everytime i turn it on it asks for a password

is there anyway to get around this? thanks.
It has been reported to me that it is illegal to try to get round the passwords of school computers, we have come across this several times, & two members were deemed guilty, & permanently banned from CF, & you are treading the same fine line, we don't know you, you may be innocent as you have claimed, if you could give us a link to your school, so we can check, Incidentally, throwing it off a building makes you sound irresponsible, why not just return it?, that attitude doesn't exactly give us confidence in you.

Lol, why didn't we think of it earlier ! Return it lol, pentium two sounds like a piece of junk to be honest ... anyways, i think he already left before we could validate anything or for what purpose he will use the information for ...

Come on folks, calm down a bit.

What he's doing could be considered dodgy, but there's no reason to get heated about it.

If he wants to hack a school computer (if it is still on the school LAN), let him. He bears the cross of his own actions if the proverbial you-know-what hits the fan, and he gets caught.

It's not our fight.

Yes, it was an obvous thing to do, return it, that's why I thought he was very dodgy, he couldn't pull the wool over my eyes though, surprised you didn't spot it, you're pretty sharp, anyway, I think I've frightened him off, hope he doesn't return, keep an eye open, he might try again, some never learn. do they?

What an attitude, Mal!, it might not be our fight, but if I or my colleagues, can't give a guy advice, it's a poor thing, I hope it made him think twice about it, because he soon vanished.

Um.... why would you "return" a free computer? That makes absolutely no sense. Anyway, as for everyone getting all jumpy about the passwords, I suggest the forum remove the stick from its a** (I can't believe I'm actually starring out a** for you douches).

Gee, look at that. So much help with BIOS password resetting on this forum. I donno.... I think telling someone again would be much more illegal this time around. Oh wait, that's not illegal.

yes, as said before..

just re-install windows XP.
since you got it from the school you don't have a license to use it anyway...

I suggest that you either,
ask the school if they have a site license or if each machine is individually licensed, (if it's the former you can't use the existing XP).
if it's the later you could try asking them for the disk.
or buy a new copy of XP.
or try something like Linux (there are plenty of threads about this... -you never know you might actually like it.

You've got me confused now, & not for the first time, are you for or against him returning it, or attempting to bypass the password?,....& don't highlight member's posts, remove the highlights you inserted now , I'm not an idiot, [careful what you comment!] I knew what they were referring to.

You're treading that fine line yet again, do you want to be banned? [not a threat]

One thing I just thought of:

If you reformatted the drive completely, and installed XP fresh, there wouldn't be anything incriminating or private left over. So that shouldn't be a problem.

However, if you're trying to crack a password to get access to other people's stuff, then I can't help you. Nobody should help you either, it's against the law as well as immoral.
