Is this CPU worth buying for gaming? I just heard about it a week ago and always wondered about the performance this CPU could have against the AMD Athlon 64 and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 series

For a gaming machine, I wouldn't go with a Sempron in general whether it's a 32 or 64 bit version. It's basically a "value" chip with reduced L2 cache and hindered Socket 754 support while an Athlon 64 packs more punch for the price.

Semprons will continue to get better as we will see in 2006.

I agree with TRDCorolla. However, if you get a high-end sempron, such as the 3300+ and you pair that with a high end video card, such as the GeForce 6800 or 7800 line, you could probably run most games fairly well. You may not be able to crank the settings to high, but you should get decent performance.

But if you're really into gaming, skip the Sempron and go with the Athlon series.
