Well the game definietly does not need the CD after installation. Thats one great thing about the Steam network. It annoys me when I have to put a disc in.
It seems like somethings going wrong with the game, and then it is dissconnecting with Steam and going back to Windows since they've encountered a problem with something in the game that it needs.
i suggest a re-install of the game, and I doubt your Windows is the source of the problem entirely. Updates downloaded from Microsoft Update only help for security use mainly, and not how the operating system performs.
By any chance have you got a firewall that might be asing for a connection while in gameplay? If your not there to see it, you cant press accept or Block, and so it'd take it a a block and dissconnect you?
If you can get into the Allow and dis-allow options, try and allow steam completly and to not bring up dialog boxes with it.
That might help, you never know.
