switching hard drive disks

I've had this compute for about a year, and another family member is going to buy another new computer that has much better specs than this one.
They would only be using it for assignments on microsoft word, excel, and simple web browsing. they said if I want I can take that one and give them this one. That would be great but there is only one problem and that's that I have alot of data on this hard drive that I don't want to transfer.

So my question is, is it possible to just switch the hard drives in the two computers?
Both of them are running Windows XP SP2.
I don't know what other information you need. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It is possible but involves lots of unneeded effort. It would be much easier to slave the old drive to the new computer to copy the files. Here's a guide to help you:
