New system will not start

I just purchased parts to build a new system. When I put it together everything went together fine exept the MOBO has a 20 pin atx connector and a seperate 4 pin connector. the PSU has a 4 pin connector and then a 24 pin atx connector(4 pins are removable but don't fit in the other 4 pin connector). I was told it should hook up fine. after hooking the PSU to the motherboard i tried to power up but only the fans came on. The monitor didn't even reconize the system was on and it wont even run a POST. I don't know what to do can anyone help

well unless you have it the wrong way it would hook up fine btw what case do you have.
