Water is the worlds best solvent. There is nothing that water cannot reduce to its natural element given enough time...as such it has been proved that because of this unique quality; it will start to disolve the container that it is stored in and thus makes itself undrinkable to animal life (unflavorful would be another term)

Although it will take the use of all the elements (rain , cold, heat, light, etc) to disolve a plastic bottle about 75 years...water sealed and stored in a plastic container will be unfit to consume in about 3 to 4 years.....thus it is an expiration date.
