I was wondering if I have a windows xp with service pack 1 does windows automatically download servicepack 2 if had a connection to the internet?

Yes it will, that is if you have automatic updates on
It will determine what your need and download the patches and updates
Or alternatively, you can download the whole package in one installer, which is especially helpful if your going to load it on several computers
 
it doesnt even show up as a download at the windows update center...you have to go find the installer manually (for me that is)
 
I have SP 1a and mine downloads service pack 2 every time i format and reinstall.

It's a pain everytime as it still takes a while on a 512kb.

You can always order a SP2 CD; that's what i did.
