anyone think i should ditch internet explorer?

if so, whats the best alternative?

What do you mean, Anti Spyware software and such???

He means stuff that are alternatives to the default programs being provided by windows xp
For adware/spyware go for ad aware and spybot, for virus scanner go for avg, for general security go for microsoft antispyware and for firewall go for zone alarm pro
That should take care of your security
