direct connect vs router

i got a wierd problem. i use a d-link di-604 router and i was having a problem with the router and i wanted to just connect a wire from my computer to the modem and not to the router, but the internet wouldnt work. when i replugged it back into the router the internet worked again. any suggestions?

How about rewriting this. I think I know what you are trying to say but you are confusing and I want to be sure.

you have to reset the modem ANYTIME you hook up a diferent device then was directly connected before hand. Hook your computer up to the modem directly, then unplugg the power from the modem for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Give it about 1 minute to sync with the network and you should be able to connect just fine.

Your isp may have the mac address of your router assigned to one ip and not be willing to give you any more
