My new computer specs

I am planning on building a new computer in about 1 month and I need some reviews on how good my specs look so far. The main thing I am looking to update is my motherboard, video card, processor and ram. I have everything else set.

INTEL P4 (550 - 3.40E GHZ) / SOCKET 775 / 800MHZ FSB / 1MB CACHE

MICROSTAR (MSI) (915G Combo-FR) Intel 915G Socket 775 800MHz FSB

MICROSTAR (MSI) (NX6800GT-256E) (RETAIL) 256MB DDR3 / PCI-Ex16 / TV OUT / DUAL DVI

PC2-4200 DDR2 (533MHZ) 1.0GB 240 PIN W/0 ECC

At the moment these parts come up to $1300. If you have any advice or comments please tell.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester Integrated into Chip FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

I'd go witht hat for CPU, I'd also get a AMD mobo socket 939. I'd then would go with PC 3200 ram. A bit cheaperi'd image.

Looks like a good setup. I would try and get a motherboard with a chip that supports Intel's dual proccessor CPU's, as this is the future for PC's.

Make sure you get a nice case to put it all in!!

Yeah, is this your first time building, or do you have some experience... cause, like Nik00117 said, amd is far better. A cpu like mine, a 3500+, can run a lot cooler and, at times, like during games, a lot faster. I had a 3.2 ghz pent. with ht and man... hot! It ran at 55C! My amd's temps, which I checked this morning, is running at 30C. Big difference. What do you plan to do? With a vid. card such as that, I'm assuming that you'll be playing some type of graphic hungry game, maybe HL2, BF2, WOW, Guild Wars, CS:S, etc. I dunno what you really play. But, anyways, amd runs pretty smoothly too. Unless you're are going to use some form of liquid cooling, amd would be a smart choice. For the money, a 3500+ or even a 3800+ would be a wise choice. As for a mobo, venice core totally kicks @$$ right now, so get that, if you want to get an amd, that is. For ram, pc3200 is the way to go. Hope this helps...

Thanks for the comments. Yes I have experience building computers, my system specs right now is, Intel P4 1.8, geforce 4 fx5200, ECS P4 mainboard and 1 gig of pc 2700. I will do alot of gaming on this machine but also multimedia stuff.

99tollap, can you help me by finding a good motherboard that supports dual proccessor.

I was just wondering should I get the 6800GT or something cheaper. The only games I play are CS: Source, Battlefield 2 and Unreal Tournament. With the system I have now I get about 20 frames in all those games I just mentioned.

Oh yeah, look at these mother of specs. These products are a little more hardcore than what you have but it supports Intel dual core processing power with a graphics card that can't be beat.....yet.


Although those are Intel specs, I would still prefer to go with an X2 system made possible by AMD. Most of us power users will tend to go that route.

Thanks for the links guys. I cant wait to build this new computer, im going all out for this one. That video card is kinda expensive here in Canada, I think i'll just settle for the 6800GT. Im gonna make this set-up worth it. Asus or Abit?

Just to make sure though, you are going with a Pentium setup? Get the Asus 6800GT. That was the card I was going to pick for you, but I wanted to see how you would react to the 7800GTX if you couldn't afford it.
