.rar

It's basically a compressed file but most often associated with illegal downloads in my mind.

100% not true. It's used commonly everywhere, though not as common as a .zip

Many web servers even archive to rar files.

Yep, it's the same thing as WinZip. I prefer WinZip more, It's alot easier to use and more user friendly from my view atleast.

RAR is the native format of WinRAR archiver. Like other archives, RAR files are data containers, they store one or several files in the compressed form. After you downloaded RAR file from Internet, you need to unpack its contents in order to use it.

RAR is much better than zip. Slower, maybe, and not integrated with Windows like zip is, but for some file types, the compression factor can be quite dramatic. You can even see a pretty chart of the compression in the properties screen. Get WinRAR and enjoy.

Winrar will open zip files but winrar arent as popular i would personally go for zip because they are the ones you can open with windows explorer.

Hope this helps :)

I'v heard the a .rar is actually more compressed than a .zip file, ,is this true or just some internet rumor?
