Irritating harddrive

I have a Western Digital 120 GB recertified hard drive. My computers will detect it, but won't install Windows XP on it. I have the hard drive setup to slave or master (I"ve tried both to see if it might say something else) and when I first boot the PC it comes to a screen that says to put a boot diskette into drive A which is a floppy drive. I don't have a windows XP boot diskette and I couldn't get one. The windows XP boot diskette is 4.18 MB and floppy disc can only hold up to 1.14 MB I think. I have tried the CD-ROM as first boot priority and it still won't install windows on it. I still get the boot diskette message. I'm guessing if I install a zip drive and put the Windows XP boot on there it will work?

I don't have a clue what to do,

Thanks to all help.

Do you have an older Windows that you could try installing? Then at least you could see if it's XP or your hd.

shot in the dark here...

Take a win98 floppy and see if it will do an fdisk and a format. Have the drive as the master on ide channel one. You can download this if you can't get your hands on one.
