CANN turns its attention to .xxx adult domains 12:31PM
ICANN, the body that oversees Internet domains, has begun commercial and technical negotiations that will result in the introduction of the .xxx top-level domain (TLD) for websites with adult content.
ICM Registry, which submitted the .xxx application, claims the suffix will create a clearly identifiable area of the Internet to help Net users avoid and keep children away from unwanted or inappropriate content. The move is backed by members of the adult entertainment industry.
Websites that register to use the domain will be expected to prevent marketing to children, protect users' privacy, block any attempt to use malicious code for spoofing and phishing, avoid the use of misleading site names and provide accurate meta tagging. However there will be nothing to stop less-scrupulous sites from continuing to use .com and other TLDs.
The $12bn industry is expected to gain access to .xxx addresses, which will cost $60 a time, from the beginning of 2006.
Do you really think this is going to stop kids going on websites like this? I suppose it would be alot more easy to filter... What does everyone think?
