i had a question about the operating system.

on win xp what is the difference between retail and oem?
with oem do you get windows updates?

if anyone can explain this that would be great

thanks

Yes of course you would get updates, from Windows Update using a internet connection.

The difference between them though is that OEM doesn't usually contain a box, or manual and just comes with just the cd in a case, and thats why these are cheaper to buy.

Retail just comes as standard with the box, manual and all, so it depends really if you wouldn't mind just getting it like that.

I hope this helps :)

Yep!!!

OEM gets the same updates and other goodies as retail. The catch to OEM is you have to buy some sort of hardware goody. Well you're susposed to but some places will sell you a copy anyway.
Make sure the OEM copy is in shrink wrap with the little booklet. The OEM cd is a hologram in gold.

all the above is true...but add this to it also.
With a retail version of xp (home/pro) you are supplied with full Microsoft Support features without charge for a year and also as you grow to another computer the retail version is allowed to travel with you to a different computer.
The OEM version has absolutely no support from Micrsoft dealing with any system issues. You will get updates but no personal support. Also the OEM version can only be installed on one computer (no exceptions) it cannot be removed and reinstalled on a different computer.
