.inf and .exe

I started this in another thread but i thought it was a little off topic so i started new one.

A .inf file will install itself. So if i plugged in something to my computer with .inf file would my computer know how to run it or would it not

I know .exe file run itself but it just launches the installation guide..and you install the options you want right??

I'm not trying to do anything. I just read another thread where it was mentioned and was wondering about the differences in the two.
