Also, here is a fix that some may need. I had problems with the boot in that XP wouldn't boot because of Dr. Watson.
If you have trouble with sp2 after installing boot to the safe mode and go to the boot.ini file in C: drive, Open properties and uncheck the read only box. Then open the file with notepad. Look for
/noexecute=optin. Change it to /noexecute=AlwaysOff.
This has worked for me as drwtsn.exe file has stopped the loading at the desktop

Make sure that if you get SP2 that you get all of the updates after it. They fix some bugs in SP2 some critical and they can make the transaction go much more smoothly and enjoyable. (as much enjoyable as you can downloading updates.....)
