Serial Port controlling my train set

Is it possible to control my train set using to serial or parallel port on my computer. I basically want to use my computer as the controller and don't want to have to put those digital chips in all of my trains (it would cost a lot).

I doubt it. If you wanted to do that it would cost you a load of money. Far to complex. You would have to write a program to control them etc

i could easily write a program to control the output of serial or parallel, i just thought there would be some way to make the computer take the place of the variable resistor

Not unless the parts are specifically designed to do the task...

Yes it seems so , but like most things when you get into it you think sh*t that was easy.
