I have a Gateway 700 Mhz with Win ME installed. My girlfriend tried to install XP on top. Now when it boots up it goes straight into setup and ends with an error message. I cant get to the bios and my bootable Win 98 cd doesnt do anything. I tried reformatting c: and have had no luck. I can get into safe mode but it shows a message saying XP cant finish setup in safe mode and it starts the process all over again. I just want to reinstall windows 98. There is no other os to chose from upon start up anymore except xp as well.

The only option is to create a startup disc, format again, and then place the Windows 98 Cd in and install again using a bootdisc.

Find bootdiscs here:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You'll need to unzip these files, and then place them onto a blank formatted floppy disc (right click the floppy drive, and go to format, and follow the steps). Now place the files from the zip file onto the floppy disk.

Unzipper = Winrar - Use this to unzip the files if you don't already have winzip:

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

Now restart and place the Windows 98 disc in, with the bootdisc in as well. It should now boot and you should be able to start the setup by typing this:

x: Setup.exe

x being the cd rom drive

I hope this helps, and works...I just hope the Windows 98 boot up disc would work when running from a Windows ME and Windows XP one it seems...

If it doesn't boot, try downloading the Windows XP boot disc from there and doing the same thing

I really hope this works

download a boot disk image, run FDISK and delete any partitions that may be there. Then try booting from the xp cd to install, see how you go then
