No handheld device without media content seems to be the criterion Microsoft guides on or at least the criterion for all PDAs, smart phones or Pocket PCs using the Windows Mobile operating system.
MSN Video was first introduced at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) event which took place at Las Vegas during 6 and 9 January. Microsoft presented a new video content download service which will provide video clips from several sources which can be transferred to portable players based on the Portable Media Center. MTV and TIVO were two of the partners announced at that time.
The service officially released yesterday by the software giant will supply daily television programs and other types of video content to all the subscribers. MSNBC.com, Food Network, FOX Sports and IFILM Corp. are a few of the specialized channels which will provide video content.
Even since the release of the Portable Media Center console, Microsoft started negotiations with over 20 media partners among which: CinemaNow, MLB.com, MSNBC.com, MSN Music, MTV Networks Music and Napster Inc. All these multimedia channels agreed to collaborate with the video download service and will supply specially formatted material for the Windows Mobile devices.
MSN Video Downloads represents one the first services aimed at portable entertainment devices.
For now, only the Americans will have access and for the premium version of this service, the price will be 19.95$. There is also a temporary free version which allows the access to a limited number of channels so that users can get an idea of the possibilities and qualities of the service.
