My drives are locked up

Yeah windows doesn't think it's a recording device otherwise the recording tab would be there.
Can you go into the hardware tab and tell me what it says as the name to the dvd drive as the driver?

yep. They are both dvd/cd r drives then... hmm... Somehow, the wrong drivers must have installed... Double click the two drives in hardware and see if it finds any updated drivers

No i doubt it could be a virus. Has it ahppened recently?

Try using System Restore and go back to a previous state (Windows 2000,ME, xp) Go to start, accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Go back to when it occured if you can. Don't worry, it won't delete any documents, but mght loose programs you've installed in that time.

They might start working again after it does its task and restarts
