Just installed RAM Old RAM not showing

My dad just put in a 512 MB ram (ddr 400 -pc3200) and the old RAM i had in a 256 MB ddr 400 -pc3200 is not showing up now. When i click "system information" it only shows 512 MB. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Yeah, if they are in DUAL channel, they need to match. Switch the DDR 256MB to another slot, and then try again.

Dual channel? If I switched the 256 it would mean switching both since there are only 2 slots. Should I switch both? Will it hurt to leave them like they are for a day or so, because I am not good with computers and my dad will probably come back over tomorrow.

Hmm, try switching both. If that fails, then go into your BIOS and disable Dual Channel RAM and see if that works. Then we will go from there. I would NOT leave them both in. Try the switch first though, then the BIOS change.

I should probably tell you now, I am not computer savvy. Where do I go to configure BIOS?

restart and while its booting hit "del" over and over until the blue screen comes up which is ur bios. or some computers are "F1"
