notebook ram

i have a notebook that has 448 mb of ram (stock... i thought they only did it by like 256, 512, etc...) and the box sez upgradable to 1 gig... so i was wondering do i need to buy a 1 gig stick to replace the whole thing or can i just but a 512 or something to fill in the rest, cuz 1 gig of ram is a geez load of money... thanks

You can by either. Sounds like you have a combination of 256 and 128 etc etc.
