I'm running windows xp home but i lost the product key so i also have windows xp pro, is it that big of a switch and will my computer handle it if it handles home fine?

It will handle it just fine. If you have the box for XP Home you can call Microsoft Support you can get a new disk shipped to you. But only if you have proof you bought it.
