Firmware... is it easy to install?

I think my dvd-rw drive (toshiba R6112) needs updated firmware because some dvd-r disks dont work with them but have been told that specific disk should have been compatable.
Ive also heard that you need to know about computers to mess about with firmware cause im pretty new to computers.
Is this right?

Media devices do have firmware, usually there is a utiitly to do it provided by the manufacturer on their website.

well for a cd drive, all you should have to do is go to the manufacturers website and download the latest firmware for your device, and it will come with a utility to install it. just make sure you don't inturrupt the process of installing the firmware or the drive will be useless.
