What's a comiler/how do I compile files Plz help

Well, it's all in the subject, I am trying to learn Java and the example that I am trying to do says I need to compile files, but what does that mean? I looked up a definition and it made it sound like I needed some kind of program, how do I do it?

go to http://developers.sun.com/ and download the compiler and documetaion. ohhh get this book begining programing with java for dummies, very good helped me, read this and itll tell you everthing. Kinda old should have at library.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

from here click on Download J2SE SDK download and install that.
Then go to J2SE 1.4.2 Documentation and click the download link.
