Would the Asus card be able to run something like Doom 3 or Half Life 2? I sure it could run it but at what type of settings?

Might get 1024 x 860 and medium to low settings my brothers 5900 can just manage high at that res.

So then I would still probably be better off going with an GeForce 6800 with 128 then the Asus listed above?
