Wierd problem with HDD

OK, so I hooked up a HDD to my computer. When I shut the computer of and turn it on it does NOT recognise it in the BIOS. But when I restart my PC it DOES Recognise it in the BIOS. But it iwll never show in my computer.....Why not??

I am running windows ME

check the bios is set to auto detect the drive.

I don't wanna upgrade to XP....

It is set to auto detect the HDD...But it is still not recognised in my computer....
