Hi everyone, N00b here.
I have a question on graphic cards and AGP slots. Right now i am running an nvidia 100/200 32mb card, its about 3.5yrs old, so its time for a new one. I want to get in on the nvidia 6600gt. I have an ASUS motherboard which has a 4x AGP slot. The 6600gt card says that it Requires AGP 8x slot compliant motherboard:

Will this card work in a 4x slot? I obviously dont want to spend the money to find out that it wont work on my system.

Also, my old card is a PCI card, can i keep them both in for better performance, or will the old card just take away from the power of the newer card?

Thanks for the help.

you can use the 8x in a 4x slot, but it will only operate at 4x speeds.
you can keep both cards in the system, however it will not help, nor hurt the performance of the agp card.

I dont care that it will work at slower speeds as long as it works. And that i dont screw anythign else up. Will it be stable or unstable? I read in some places that many cards can be unstable if not placed in the correct slot.

Don't get it. If your MOBO is only AGP 4X, you will be wasting money on a card that will only bottleneck your AGP Bus big time. If you wan't a good card, go for the 5700 Ultra or 5900 series, nothing more for AGP4X, otherwise bottlenecking occurs.

Also, that 6600 is a "Chaincrap" card. Chaintech suks big time. I have blown 9 of their cards during my lifetime, and only no eVGAs (excluding my 5 eVGA that blew in SLi, but that was MOBO defect)

Go with this card, although it isn't eVGA, PNY is also extremely good as well: This card saves you some money, is an Ultra Edition, and has very good base cooling as well. It is a bit pricy for a 5700, but then again, it is PNY and it is an Ultra.

GL either way. BTW, if you still want to go with the 6600GT (which is fine), go with this one.

This card however, is inferior to the one you have above. Go with the card I listed before this one.

Here again you answer another question to which you haven't a clue. I'll take the 6600gt over my 5950 ultra any day, it outperforms in every way, and supports shader 3.0. It doesn't matter what 8x card you put in a 4x slot, it still will not perform like it should, but at least he will have the card when he upgrades boards. Last and not least, why do you assume they are getting a chaintech, chaintech is not the only one who makes the card.

This person is asking for help, not assumptions, again I wish you would get your shit straight before shooting off at the mouth.

Ok guys, no need for fighting. I am just asking questions and i'll take everyones advice into account b4 making a move on anything. Thanks for the help so far...And the reason he was saying chaintek is cr@p is b/c i posted a link to a chaintek card. I dont know much about these manufactureres so if one is better than another that advice will be greatly noted.

So heres where i stand right now. The 6600GT in PCI Express is cheaper than in AGP. However, if i get the card in PCI Express i will have to upgrade my motherboard (obviously), which its over 2 yrs old so i dont totally mind doing that, especially since i would be able to get a cheaper video card (and its also better in PCI E version). Someone told me yesterday though that if i upgrade my motherboard, i will also have to upgrade my memory as a PCI Express mobo only runs DDR2 memory. Therefore i lose my 512mb of DDR memory plus my motherboard. Is this true? Can i not use my old memory on a PCI E mobo? And how expensive is the DDR2 memory? Is there anything else i would have to upgrade in order to use the PCI E mobo? Is it worth going through all this trouble or should i just stick the 6600GT AGP in my 4x slot on my old board and scrap the rest of this mess?

Why do upgrades have to be so complicated....:(
