Minimum Components

I am gathering parts for my first computer build. What I am wondering is what is the minimum components that I would need to turn on the computer. I know what parts I need to have a complete system, but I am wondering if after only gathering say the case, cpu, and motherboard is there any way to see if each part is working properly. What parts would I for sure need. I have heard different answers from other people but just thought I would try it out on all of the experts here. I know this sounds like a stupid question but I am just wanting to make sure that the parts I am getting are working the way they should.

You could put the board in the case with the heatsink, processor, and at least RAM and it should do something...go to bios maybe.

a video card to look at your bios settings would help as well....
