Gateway Recovery system

I have a gateway windows 98 notebook and it says it is missing a crucial item every time i start it so i want to perform a recovery on it. if there is any other way besides a recovery, could you please tell me, if not, how do you perform the recovery. The notebook is like 4 years old and i have lost the instruction manual.

you most likely need a recovery, all you need to do is insert your restore disks and it will guide you from there. If you dont have restore disks, there will possibly be a restore partition on your hard drive. If not call gateway to see if you can get some restore disks.

Why don't you just back up your data and then format it. After that install Windows XP SP2 which has a system restore option?
