Are they a security threat, or just a nuissance. I seem to get them even when not connected to the internet

If you get loads of them, you probably have got spyware..

also depends on the browser yer using and how you have it setup....and if it comes w/it's own popup blocker.

Lately I've been using Adware Filter, very pleased with it. Also have spybot installed, just incase

yah, using them together will usually take care of it.
