New Guy

yeh dude welcome to CF.
Seen how you have chosen CF, I am able to recognize your wisdom and intelligence...
lol
good luck with your comp.

thanks

thanks, any suggestions for the new build? I'm new at this and I have NO idea what I'm doing..... I know I'll probably go with this much, 3.0 MHz P4, 1.5 Gb Pc3200 and a Lian Li PC-7B Case.

I have two lists that I'm trying to work from, this one

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Kingston HyperX, 2x512MB CAS 2 RAM
Lian Li PC-7B Case
Thermaltake W0014 Silent Purepower 480W
Gainward nVIDIA GeForce 6800
Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM SATA
TOSHIBA 8X Black DVD±RW

and this one :

gigabyte 8i915p duo pro--$139.00
pentium 4 540 3.2 Ghz -- $222.00
1GB corsair pc3200--$193.25
512MB corsair pc3200--$75.27
segate 120GB SATA II-- $94.50
liteon 16x dual layer dvd burner--$69.99
evga 256MB 6600 --$148.00
TT purepower 480W $55.00
XP Pro --$146.00
samsung 997DF --$202

I'm leaning more to the second one, any objections or suggestions? I'm shooting in the dark with this build and all the help I can get will be great. thanks

I'd suggest just going with the AMD 64, instead of the P4. But that's my own opinion. Go with the AMD 64 3000+ (or 3200+.. whatever your price can afford).. and go with Asus NForce3 250GB board... I forget what it was called.

I'm going to be running CAD and rendering programs, I'm a mechanical engineering major.... in the long run which is better?

I would say the AMD 64.. but I'm not sure.. I think in the long run, definitely the Athlon with its 64-bit architecture. That may be very beneficial for you.
