all athlon 64's are compatible with windows, i have the 3400+ 
i would reccomend getting the "clawhammer" core, even tho it runs at 2.2ghz it has 1mb L2 cache. the "newcastle" core runs slightly faster at 2.4ghz, but only has 512k L2 cache..... mine was $280 or $290 i belive....
