Annoying wireless usb adapters

Has anyone had any problems getting usb wireless adapters to work on win 98. It seems that internet explorer gets confused with the old dial up/broadband settings. The adapters have connection to the router, just need to send internet explorer the right way. Driving me nuts!

remove the previous connections and make IE "autosense" by clickin on LAN setting and ticking "autodetect" setting
