But I do feel it would take some action away from the forum. It kind of takes away the point of having a forum doesn't it.

I suppose it would. There's probably a way to get it working for instead of as the Forum? Can't think of it at the moment - but I shall!

chat rooms always take conversation away from forums... and forums always take conversations away from chat room.

It's a strange phenomonon, they can both co-exist, but it rarely works...
