Please help me with windows 2000 server

hello all,
iam not what i would call myself an advance computer user but avrage,i really have problems with my newly insalled windows 2000 server,it is uptodate from microsoft with the latest sp pack and critical updates but my pc still gives me loats of difficulty in the following areas:-

booting(after booting it takes around 15 minutes to start)..says checking network connection.
cpu and memory is always on its highest i have p4 1.7 and 256 ram but when that happens i cant even open media player...

several unidentified processes using up all the cpu and memory,


please help me guys.
