I know basic HTML...if I learn javascript does that cover making usernames and having people login to get to sections of my site?

not really, javascript always gets sent to the host and runs on the host computer using a vrtual machine, so if a user has to authenticate they only have to authenticate with their machine.

look in the temporary internet files and you'll be able to open the javascript files in notepad and poke about with them till you find what you'd need to 'break' into your site.

Java script is bet left to form actions like checking forms (validation) providing hotlink effects, animations tittle bar and status bar effects, and redirecting pages.

if you want to create a proper log on script then a I suggest you use a host that gives you either PHP or ASP and a dataase of some type.

brinkster allow you to use ASP and allow you to have access databases, server side login scripts are always the most secure.
