I don't think you should have included MySQL or MSSQL up there....those aren't programming languages :\
They're RDBMS's, or Relational Database Management Systems; designed to work WITH most of those other programming languages you've listed. Namely PHP, Perl, and ASP.
Although I'm quite new to programming in general, and my track record isn't that long, I would have to run with PHP on this one. Most versatile, compatible, easiest and most popular of all the languages mentioned.

The problem with javascript is that the way in which it is enterpreted varies accross browsers and platforms so writing applications in it becomes so complicated. Other than that, PHP and mySQL are very good languages.
Steveswaldo
October 19th, 2003, 10:33 PM
Well i do them all but this is my order of preference:
PHP
Perl
XML
Javascript
.net
MySQL/MSSQL != programming languages, they simply are 'perks' or database systems to different langauges.
David Lindon
October 20th, 2003, 07:02 AM
I agree with steve; good choice of language!

I think I'll just have to conform to the majority on this one. Have been using PHP for a while now, think it's a well supported and accepted script language. I also admire the developers as the language is free.

PHP's database integration may force me to move away from perl later on.

I have to admit that I am young and cheap - and have only recently got the idea in my head of working as a Software Developer at Microsoft. However, from what I am planning and what has been moving into play (things like buying the software and reading required to teach yourself) and have been caught aside by, based on the .NET programming C#. I have no idea why or how it just caught me and I thought - now that is the first language I have to learn!
I was wondering what your lot thought about it (all bar Novartic; who can hardly type and so I doubt he can program quite that many languages)?

I like offline programming more than WWW programming. Only because I know more WWW programming than offline programming and I like to make things myself and not be a skiddie and download somebody elses program.
Lord Kalthorn
February 23rd, 2004, 01:47 AM
Yeah - I can see the point of view behind that. I plan to be an Offline Programmer; in C# as many may have picked up! Software Developer at Microsoft, cross fingers, hopefully :D. If not I have a back up plan - I can go back to University, do a Doctorate in ICT and then do some kind of Open University Degree in Teaching and do ICT at school! But that would be a very very last option!

And the Server Extensions are very good too.

Only because ASPX isn't on there :D
If you add the 11 for XML which you use in ASPX, the 6 for .NET which makes up the structure of APSX, 5 a third of the MySQL/MSSQL votes because MSSQL is the basis for ASPX, and all 30 of the Javascript votes because ASPX can use J#, then ASPX is ahead by 17 :D

XML is eXtensible Markup Language, and doesn'y only apply to HTML... (XHTML)
it looks a little like HTML in as far as there is a tag system, but it is much more strinct.
and any data can beput into xml, so long as tags are opened and closed heirachicaly.

Hi guys,
I really go with all three PHP, javascript, and MySQL. They r like these three friends who understand themselves very well and each of them love to help the other. I used them in my senior project and i really found out that these three were so good. I didn't try .net before but i really was impressed with PHP's simple syntax, especially with MySQL connectivity.

MySQL has a slightly different syntax to MSSQL, which has a different syntax to Oracle SQL.
if you are willnig to count XML, (which has no active properties of it's own without an active language such as PHP / Perl / ASP / ASPX, then surelyyou can could SQL languages as a language to program with websites.

Oracle 10g, the worlds frst, (and only)true grid database server...
Oracle is great...
admitidly not as easy as MSSQL (by far the easiest to write and adminster).
Not even as easy as MySQL which sits between the two. but once you get to grips with it an figure it out it's actually not that bad (perhaps even refreshing) to use.
In my job, (as a network admin) I get to play wih lots of server programs,
Camers isn't completly right, (yes) we support Oracle databases for governmen agencies, but we also support them in much smaler companies, not noly is it thewords most powerfull database, it's also multi platform.
so for databases, ease of use
MSSQL > MySQL > Oracle
ease of administration
MSSQL > MySQL > Oracle.
sheer power and scalability
Oracle >> MSSQL > MySQL
resource use
Oracle > MSSQL > MySQL
Lord Kalthorn
February 8th, 2005, 12:09 AM
That's suprising. I've never used MSSQL, I just presumed it was harder to use than MySQL?
But then again; Microsoft - its got to be good :D
root
February 8th, 2005, 10:54 AM
no, much much easier,
My SQL is awkward to use in comparrisson, (It's all down to the grahpical interface.) -MySQL is obviously primerally designed to be used on Linux servers that may not even have a window system installed. -so thats why (IMHO) MSSQL beats MySQL for administration.
The actual language is very very simillar, so a more accurate way of displaying the comparisson would perhaps have been
MSSQL~MySQL or MSSQL>=MySQL...
For resource use I only compared windows systems as MSSQL doesn't run on Linux/Unix.
I also accounted for well maintained servers, MSSQL suffers hugely from massive memory leaks. (in fact I've seen the process taking up 1.5GB of RAM on a machine that hadn't been restarted for over 6 months).
so on reflection, MySQL has better resource use if you want to have an unattended server.
Lord Kalthorn

Yeah. Seriously - if you're not into anything specific or complicated you can make a styless site (style of course is variable so you don't add it into programming time) in two days. From scratch. Login involves three lines of Code in ASPX 2.0. Login Checking, Registering, everything. Its all built in for ease. It writes a Database, and does it all for you. Even Web Parts like My MSN with drag and drop is easy as pie. Very few lines of code at its basic level - and you take advantage of over 10,000 lines of Javascript in the ASP.NET Runtime that Microsoft prepared earlier.
